Nice red fruits, almost round, about 10 cm long, but not very regular. Very good taste. The name allegedly comes from the fact that this variety had to withstand hail. These tomatoes were grown by Mr. Guy Bourgeois, a market gardener in Ste-Dorothée (Laval) in the 1950s and 1960s to be sold at the Bonsecours market, an old public market in the Old Montreal. A big thank you to his daughter Suzanne for sharing the seeds. We received them from René Paquet who got them from Antoine D’Avignon, a heirloom seed saving pioneer in Quebec.

Dark as the streets of Montreal deep into the night. Early, just as the arrival of winter over Quebec.
Easy, to be grown in the field as well as in a pot on a Plateau balcony.
Born in our field from a cross between 2 varieties, Black Crime and Teton de Venus, this tomato kept the dark colour of the former and the shape and density of the latter. It however yields much earlier than its parents, and produces much more.
The variety is quite stable, but might still display some irregular shapes. We are keeping up our breeding work with the hope of creating a perfect tomato.
The fruits are slightly smaller than a tennis ball. Our team carried a taste test and found a ...steak flavour! The foliage is regular, and the plant is not prone to diseases.

The 'Reine des Glaces' Lettuce is a bicentenary variety coming from France. It is also known as Regina delle Ghiacciole in Italy.
It's a batavia lettuce; its leaves are crinkled and have a wavy edge, they're crispy and sweet. This variety grows fast and tolerates well the heat; it doesn't develop a bitter taste and doesn't bolt easily. It also tolerates the first snowfalls well, making it a polyvalent crop. After harvested the head, the remaining leaves can still be cut and eaten as fresh greens.

Small head lettuce with red undertones. Baquieu lettuce combines hardiness with early harvest. It might be an ancient German variety then called 'Erstling' (meaning the first) due to how early it can be harvested. Mentions of this variety are found in horticultural documents of the end of the 17th Century.

Semi-Runner/Dry. 100 days to first dry seed.
Viney plants can be grown on the ground like a bush bean, but would probably benefit from growing on some support. Very productive of 4 to 5 inch oval green pods that are lightly streaked with purple. 4 to 6 small seeds per pod.
The origin is unsure but, according to Fruitition Seeds, seeds were traded at the Common Ground Fair in Maine, USA, in 2003. We obtained them from a seed swap in Ontario.

The taste of Casper eggplants is mild and aromatic, with a little something of a mushroom taste. The flesh is tender. It is a great in soups, stews, roasts, ratatouilles, with other vegetables, or simply fried by itself.
It will grow just as well in a container on your balcony as in the soil in your garden.
