The Jimmy Nardello peppers come from the Basilicata region in the south of Italy. This region has had a rich and diverse pepper culture for generations. The Jimmy Nardello first came to life in Giuseppe and Angella Nardello's garden in the 19th century. They emigrated to Connecticut in 1887, along with all of they children, and brought with them the seeds of this long and thin-skinned red pepper.
According to the story, their 4th child, Jimmy Nardello, became a passionated gardener. He kept on cultivating the family seeds which his parents had preserved all their lives. Shortly before his death, in 1983, he donated his seeds to Seed Savers Exchange and they quickly became famous amongst the farming community.
The Jimmy Nardello pepper is considered on of the best peppers to be fried because its flesh becomes tender and sweet. It is also delicious eaten fresh but can be dried as well. Upon maturity, it presents a deep red color, an elongated form and tends to twirls as it grows.
