Pink Canabec Tomato

Pink Canabec tomatoes give pink, round, middle-sized fruits. This tomato was developped in 1975 by the agronomist Robert Doucet at the Saint-Hyacinthe Agriculture Research Center. It was created specially to suit Quebec regions’ climate. It is therefore a productive, early-yielding variety that’s quite compact for an indeterminate tomato.

Habit: Indeterminate, can be tutored.
Width: 0.45 m (if staked) to 0.60 m (growing freely) in width
Cultivation : Sow indoors from mid-March until early April at a depth of 5 mm. Should take 7 to 10 days to germinate.
Gradually harden off your seedlings to outdoor conditions about 10 days before transplanting by taking them outside during daytime. When transplanting, lay the plant down and slightly curve it up so that the leafy part sticks out and up; new roots will grow from the buried stem.
Can be transplanted outside after the last frost. Water abundantly after transplanting.
Should yield fruits after 55 to 65 days.
Soil: Well-drained, rich

This tomato is a cross between Black Krim and Zapotec tomatoes. It combines the best traits of these two heirloom classics. The flavor of the Black Ruffle is exceptional. The red purple fruit is pleated like an accordion. It is a rare variety really worth discovering.

This tomato variety was developed in the early 50s by the geneticist and profesor Joseph-O Vandal. He worked for the Laval University for over 30 years, and created several horticultural varieties adapted to our climate. Quebec #13 tomatoes are vigorous and give average-sized dark red fruits early in the season. This tomato has an exceptional taste, very few seeds, and a thin skin which is easy to peel off. This variety must be eaten in the days following harvest as it doesn't keep as well as store-bought tomatoes.

Black Crimea, or Black Krim, is a very ancient yet still popular black tomato variety. It was rediscovered in the 90s on the Crimean Peninsula. A beefsteak type of tomato, it grows massive fruits; they are about 10 cm wide. The tomatoes' color is an unique mix of purple, red, black, and red.

Bicolored tomato with large and very sweet marbled fruits. The pink, ferm flesh has very little acidity and has won a number of taste contests in the United States. Yellow fruits blush with red orange colors as they ripen.
This heirloom tomato first appeared in New York in 1921 under the name Ruby Gold. It was renamed Gold Medal in 1976 by American seed collector Ben Quisenberry.

Back in the 60s, Mr. Réginald Lefebvre owned a farm in St-Rémi, QC. On some day, a couple Spaniards ask him if they can use some of his land to grow their tomatoes. He accepts, and quickly discovers the potential of one of their variety. So much that he begins growing it himself. In 1981, there is no successor to take over and the farm has to be sold. A sad end, but not for the tomato which made history!

Nice red fruits, almost round, about 10 cm long, but not very regular. Very good taste. The name allegedly comes from the fact that this variety had to withstand hail. These tomatoes were grown by Mr. Guy Bourgeois, a market gardener in Ste-Dorothée (Laval) in the 1950s and 1960s to be sold at the Bonsecours market, an old public market in the Old Montreal. A big thank you to his daughter Suzanne for sharing the seeds. We received them from René Paquet who got them from Antoine D’Avignon, a heirloom seed saving pioneer in Quebec.

The Corne de bouc tomato gives long, cylindrical with a curved pointy tip red fruits. This variety is probably our favorite in terms of taste: sweet and fragrant, it is absolutely DE-LI-CIOUS!

Currant tomatoes are cousins with the common tomato we all know, both originally from Central and South America. The plants grow clusters of several tiny sweet fruits. The seeds we are selling however have a peculiar story...
Léon was a grumpy gardener who didn't like kids. Always a smoke between his lips, he would chase them with the back of his hand whenever they got too close to his parcel in Montreal community garden. Yet the kids couldn't help but want some of his tomatoes, which were shining under the sun just like rubies. Truth be told, Léon didn't really like anyone regardless of age... but how did we love his tomatoes! So, under the full moon (for real!), I sneaked into the garden, and stole a couple seeds.
Ever since I've been growing them, and my kids love them!
