The wonderberry is one of the rare annual plants to produce small sweet berries. This hybrid was created in the early 1900s by Luther Burbank. This botanist, American horticulturist, pioneer in the sciences of agriculture created over the years more than 800 varieties of plants. The wonderberry produces a very large quantity of small mauve, almost black fruits. Being part of the nightshade family, care must be taken to consume only ripe fruit. Green fruits contain solanine, which in high doses is toxic.
